Vecna
is a character famous to D&D players. Evidently the ancient undead
mage was so powerful that when he was destroyed, parts survived -
notably one hand and one eye. These ancient artifacts could be
(painfully) substituted for those of a living character, imbuing that
character with evil powers. The "Head of Vecna" is a joke artifact,
because to use it the character would have to sacrifice their own head
- having obviously bad results. This is one step removed from that
story, the cruelest cut of all.
