Alright, it's an April fools comic. And the question is "why does magic work differently now than it used to?" The correct answer is "because we're playing third edition D&D instead of second now, and the spells have changed enough to be noticeably different. Here's my tongue in cheek in game rationale for the change. Think of it as "hooked on phonics" gone too far.
